Boat trailers for Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty

Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty region is one of New Zealand's boating hotspots. The harbour provides sheltered water for small boats, while the open bay offers serious offshore fishing, diving, and cruising. Mount Maunganui's bar crossing leads to some of the country's best game fishing grounds, and the coastline from Waihi Beach down to Maketu is dotted with launch options. Tauranga boaters need a trailer that handles regular salt water immersion, can cope with the busy ramps at Sulphur Point and Pilot Bay, and tows reliably on the highway. Alpha Trailers are built with structural steel, fully hot-dip galvanised, and designed for exactly this kind of regular coastal use.

Where Bay of Plenty boaters launch

Sulphur Point Boat Ramp is the main facility in Tauranga, offering multiple lanes and good access to the harbour and out through the Mount Maunganui entrance. Pilot Bay near the Mount has a calmer ramp popular with smaller boats and paddlers. Waihi Beach, Bowentown, and Katikati offer alternatives along the coast. Maketu estuary to the east provides access to sheltered harbour boating. For offshore game fishing, most boats launch from Sulphur Point or Pilot Bay and head out past the Mount into the open bay, where marlin, kingfish, and snapper are on the menu. Tauranga's ramps are tidal, and a multi-roller trailer makes launching more efficient across all tide states.

Quick delivery from the Waikato

Tauranga is one of the closest major centres to our Waikato base. Delivery is fast, often next day, and many Tauranga customers choose to visit the workshop in Tamahere for a face-to-face discussion and same-day pickup. Whether you are running a small harbour boat, a mid-size snapper fisher, or a large offshore game boat, we match the right Alpha trailer to your hull and your launch conditions. The Bay of Plenty's warm, salt-rich water makes full hot-dip galvanising non-negotiable for trailer longevity.

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver boat trailers to Tauranga?
Yes. Tauranga is close to our Waikato workshop, so delivery is usually next day. Many Bay of Plenty customers also drive to our Tamahere workshop for a visit and same-day pickup, which is about an hour's drive from Tauranga.
Which trailer is best for game fishing out of the Mount?
Game fishing boats heading out of Mount Maunganui are typically in the 18 to 23-foot range. Our AT 600-SR (single-axle for up to 20ft), Tandem 600, Tandem 650, or Tandem 700 suit these larger boats. Tandem models provide better highway stability and the safety margin of four wheels. All come with full hot-dip galvanising for heavy salt water exposure.
Are rollers or carpet pads better for Tauranga Harbour?
For Tauranga Harbour, we recommend multi-rollers. The ramps at Sulphur Point and Pilot Bay are tidal, and rollers let you launch and load in shallower water. Rollers also make solo loading easier because the boat self-centres. Carpet pads suit flat-bottomed boats at deep ramps, but most Bay of Plenty boating favours V-hull boats and rollers.
How do I maintain my trailer in Tauranga's salt water conditions?
Rinse your entire trailer with fresh water after every salt water launch, paying attention to wheel bearings, brake components, and roller bushings. Repack bearings at least once per season. Check lights and wiring connections regularly. A hot-dip galvanised frame handles salt far better than paint, but rinsing still extends bearing and hardware life.
Can I get a trailer matched to my specific boat in Tauranga?
Absolutely. Tell us your boat make, model, length, hull type, and where you usually launch. We will recommend the right Alpha trailer and configure the rollers to suit your hull shape. Most quotes go out within one business day.
